One of the richest arboreta in Europe is found at Nogent-sur-Vernisson. 35 hectares, 2,600 species of trees and shrubs from five continents — a botanical treasure right next to the Orléans Forest.
The Arboretum National des Barres owes its existence to the Vilmorin family, who acquired the estate in 1820 to experiment with acclimatising new tree species from around the world. This pioneering work in applied botany gave rise to one of Europe's most remarkable arboricultural collections.
Today managed by the State, the site is a place of discovery, research and environmental education, open to the general public. It earned Nogent-sur-Vernisson its nickname of "Village of the Tree".
Since 2012, monumental sculptures carved from dead trees have enriched the park, combining art and nature in spectacular fashion.
